Do I need to Update My Will?????

_

This is a question that I hear all the time. My answer is always different. The easy answer is I don't know. The complicated answer is (like an attorney) "it depends". The real answer is...it depends on what has happened in your life since your last will was drafted. Its never a bad idea to pull out your legal documents every few years to read them over. Take notes on important items in your documents when you sign them and see if your notes match up with your current wishes.

Big changes in your life should necessitate a change. A few of these circumstances are:

1. Marriage/Divorce.

2. Legal Separation.

3. Death of a Spouse.

4. Birth/Death of a Child.

5. Large change of wealth (up or down).

6. Starting or ending a business.

7. Retirement.

8. Moving to a different state (Laws may be different).

9. Child becomes a special needs child.

10. Spouse/child develops a drug/alcohol dependence (or relapse).

11. Move to a nursing home/assisted living situation.

12. Any other change in family dynamics.

Things change. Life is complicated. Any or all of these situations above should provoke you to grab your legal documents for a quick review. If you need help understanding them, give us a call or shoot us an email. We'll be happy to sit down with you FREE OF CHARGE and explain to you what your documents mean and how they pertain to your current situation.
